Virtual 3D Terrains
The terrain database is a part of the virtual environment. It shows the surrounding static environments, such as rivers, fields, hills, mountains, lowlands, etc.
The primar output format of the virtual 3D terrain database is OpenFlight.
The terrain database consists of two basic database types:
- The geospecific terrain database is a virtual representation of real existing places on Earth. The sources are digital elevation data, rectified orthophotos, raster or vector maps, photos of the buildings, vegetation and other culture features. Orthophoto is applied on the terrain polygon.
- The geotypical terrain database is virtual representation of fictive places (desert, european countryside, jungle, etc.). It contains typical terrain relief, typical vegetation, typical buildings, etc. Repeated texture tiles representing different surfaces (sand, grass, asphalt) are applied on the terrain polygons.
